Minus the advertisement blitzkriegs of a myriad of Indian tea, oil, mobile and other brands, Darjeeling looks like any other mid-hill-town in Nepal. The main reason for that is its Nepaliness: the accented Nepali lingo, music, culture and literature; and the Tibeto-Burmese-Nepali looks of the rainbow of Nepali ethnic diversity. At the pub by the Chau-Rasta, a Nepali live band belts out ‘Musu musu hashi deu na’, ‘Chhekyo Chhekyo Darjeeling danda’ on weekend evenings.

A weekend visitor doesn’t get to see that kind of downside. Lounge at the pleasant terrace called Chaurasta; read Subash, the pen name of littérateur-cum-politician Subash Ghising, or Indra Bahadur Rai; or just listen to Shanti Thatal, Ambar Gurung or Aruna Lama or Daisi Baraili. All of them hail from the surrounding hills. Here, as overweight Kolkata tourists ride mules and go for a ‘chakkar’, the statue of Nepali-language and ‘Nepali Jatiya’ poet Bhanu Bhatka stands tall.

At 21,00 meters, Darjeeling smiles at the visitors even on a gloomy monsoon day. During British Raj in India, it was the best hill station for British officers. Famous as much for its natural beauty as it is for its tea, Darjeeling is simply dazzling. Rainfall drenches this town during the 100 days of monsoon. Yet there’s acute shortage of water in the hills. “There’re a lot of migrants here these days so a lot pressure on nature,” says Sanjay Pradhan, a restaurateur.

“Hanna kata hindeko yo keto, chhito aijo la,” a local bloke sporting hip-off jeans, gelled and spiked hair and funky sunglasses is overheard yelling at his friend at the nearby road-side teashop. Take a walk along the snaking trial leading to the hilltop. Past the pine trees with fluttering Om-Mani-Peme-Hum Lungtas, and the Shiva Lingam, playful monkeys quarrel for a share of food or fruit most of the time.

At a distance, as the cool breezes soothe your soul, another beautiful sight greets you: a maroon-robed monk comes out of the temple full of Hindu priests and pilgrims. Just about everything here is in near-perfect harmony. On a clear day, you can also see Tenzing Norgay’s second home from this summit. And Kalimpong and Tiger Hill to the east and Antu Danda, Ilam, to the west. Not Kanchanjungha, though. It’s monsoon time!

शुक्रबारको ऐतिहासिक प्रधानमन्त्री-प्रचण्ड वार्ता र आठ दल शीर्षस्थ बैठकपछि प्रचण्डको पहिलो सार्वजनिक पत्रकार सम्मेलनको उल्लेखनीय विशेषता त्यहाँको अव्यवस्था हो । राज्य पुनर्संरचनालाई प्रमुख मुद्दा बनाउने माओवादीका नेतालाई त्यो एउटा प्रेरणा बनेको हुनुपर्छ । खासमा देशको वास्तविकता त्यसले छर्लंग पार्छ जहाँ दर्जनौं पत्रकार दिनभरि प्रधानमन्त्री निवासको मूलगेट बाहिर प्रतीक्षा गर्छन् र प्रचण्ड त्यहाँ प्रवेश गरेको साढे दस घन्टापछि अँध्यारो त्रिपालमुनि माइक र बिजुलीबिनाको सम्मेलनमा सहभागी हुन्छन् ।

प्रचण्ड पहिलोपल्ट धेरै पत्रकारसामु प्रकट भएका थिए जसलाई उनले आवेशभन्दा तर्कका बलले प्रभावित गर्ने प्रयास गरे । तत्कालीन अव्यवस्थालाई व्यंग्य गर्दै उनले आमजनताले बुझ्ने भाषामा तिनको समर्थन हासिल गर्ने गरी सरल शैलीमा आफूलाई प्रस्तुत गरे । नेपाली जनताको महानता‘, १९ दिने दोस्रो जनआन्दोलनको गौरव‘, एक्काइसौं शताब्दीको पहिलो महत्त्वपूर्ण राजनीतिक परिवर्तनकेही वर्षमै देश बनाउन सकिने हिम्मतमा जोड दिए । अमेरिका र भारतले वैशाख ८ गते -शाही घोषणामा नेपाललाई झुकाउन खोजेको टिप्पणी गर्दै उनले नेपाली जनताको संघर्षशीलता र राजनीतिक चेतना विश्वमै अग्रणी रहेको प्रशंसा पनि गरे ।

-प्रचण्डको घडी अनुसार उनले लगभग आधा घन्टा मन्तब्य दिए । डा बाबुराम भट्टराई सुनि मात्रै रहे ।

उनले मन्तव्यमा कतै पनि कसैलाई पनि चेतावनी दिने शब्द प्रयोग गरेनन् । पुनः युद्धमा फर्किने धम्कीको भाषा प्रयोग गरेनन् । उल्टै सेरेमोनियल राजसंस्थाको पक्षमा उभिएका प्रधानमन्त्री गिरिजाप्रसाद कोइरालाको भर्खरैको विवादास्पद टिप्पणीप्रति लक्ष्य गर्दै त्यस्तो विचार राख्ने अरूको अधिकार भएको खुलस्त गरे । आफू लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्रमा रहेको प्रस्ट गर्दै उनले अरूको विचारको स्वतन्त्रताप्रति सम्मान उनको मन्तव्यको महत्त्वपूर्ण पक्ष थियो ।

संविधानसभा निर्वाचनका लागि अन्तरिम संविधानअन्तरिम सरकार र संयुक्त राष्ट्रसंघको अनुगमनको कार्यनीति पारित भएकाले प्रचण्ड सार्वजनिक भएको दिनको महत्त्व नेपालको इतिहासमा आगामी दिनको राजनीतिक सफलतामा निर्भर हुनेछ । प्रतिनिधिसभा विघटन हुनेबित्तिकै डेढ महिनासम्म सदनले गरेका प्रयासको खासै सार रहने हुँदैन । दलहरूले संसदीय समितिहरू बनाई राज्यसंयन्त्रलाई पारदर्शीउत्तरदायीपूर्ण बनाउन तयार गरेका विधि र यन्त्र निष्प्रभावी हुनेछन् । हतियार र सैन्य दस्तासहितका माओवादीले संविधानसभा निर्वाचनसम्म आफ्नो शक्तिको प्रभाव कायम राख्नेछन् । आगामी चैतसम्म निर्वाचन गर्ने अवधारणाअनुसार प्रचण्ड खुलारूपमा आफ्नो सुरक्षाघेरा र कार्यकर्तापंक्तिमा देशभरि राजनीतिक अभियानमा जुट्नेछन् । शुक्रबार बिहान पोखराबाट गृहमन्त्री कृष्णप्रसाद सिटौलासँगै हेलिकप्टरमा सपत्नीक राजधानी आएका प्रचण्डसँग डा. बाबुराम भट्टराई पनि छन् । उनले भनेअनुसार दुवै जना त्यो राजनीतिक अभियानमा साथै छन् जसको राजनीतिक अर्थ छ । प्रचण्ड र बाबुराम एउटै हेलिकप्टरमा आएका मात्र होइनन्पत्रकार सम्मेलनमा सँगै बसेकामात्र पनि थिएनन्दुवैले एउटै रंग र कपडाको कमिज पाइन्ट लगाएका थिए । पार्टीभित्र एकताका लागि महत्त्वपूर्ण त्यो पक्षको उल्लेख गर्न उनले कमरेड भट्टराई र आफू मिसनमा हिँडेकोउल्लेख गरे । प्रचण्ड आमपत्रकारमाझ सार्वजनिक हुने क्षण प्रधानमन्त्री निवासको बगैंचाको त्रिपालमुनि माओवादी सैन्य दस्ताका सदस्यहरू सादा पोसाकमा पहरा दिइरहेका थिए ।संविधानसभाले संविधान निर्माण गरी राजनीतिक खाका नकोरेसम्म माओवादीसँग हतियार र मिलिसिया रहिरहनु स्वतन्त्र र भयरहित वातावरणका लागि एउटा गम्भीर प्रश्न रहिरहनेछ । आगामी एक महिनामा अन्तरिम सरकारमा सामेल हुन तम्तयार माओवादीसँग समानान्तर हतियारसमेत रहनु अन्य राजनीतिक दलका लागि लघुताबोधको विषय हुनेछ । संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघले नेपालभित्र भयरहित स्वच्छ र स्वस्थ निर्वाचनको वातावरण तयार गर्ने जिम्मेवारी पूरा गर्न पूर्णरूपमा सम्भव हुनेछैन । त्यसका लागि राष्ट्रिय शक्तिहरू आफैं तयार हुनुपर्छ । हतियारसहितका माओवादी नेता प्रचण्डले अन्य दलहरूलाई विश्वस्त हुने वातावरण सुनिश्चित गरे उनले भनेझैं नेपाली जनताले आफ्नो भाग्य आफैं बनाएपछि बल्ल देशको संकट समाधान हुनेछ । उनको खुला जीवनको प्रमुख सर्त त्यही हुनेछ ।

We were astonished when we saw the villages, hotels and schools on the way all empty. We learnt it was the season to collect “worms” in the highlands. The locals call the Yarchagumba “life saving worms” as a single bug costs from Rs 50 to 75. “For us, it’s like a seasonal cultivation,” said Bishnu Lal Budha, the Kantipur reporter in Dolpa, “People have no time to stay at home during the season.”

We headed towards the lake, coercing our feet against the steep mountains. The uphill trails adorned the serpentine queues of the worm collectors. The people hailed as far as from Jumla, Rolpa, Rukum and Jajarkot, and had their ration transported on the backs of donkeys and jhopas.

We were accompanied by Thinley, the chief protagonist in Caravan, from Dunai. He was on his way to his village Saldang. He, along with daughter Dawa, was returning from Kathmandu with a stock of medicines for the health post at Saldang. “It’ll take three more days to reach home,” he said, standing on the bank of the lake.

We felt his popularity everywhere in Dolpo. The CDs of Caravan were available at the shops in Dunai. “I’m amazed when people approach me, saying they want to cast me in their products,” he told us, laughing.

The emerald blue lake of Phoksundo looked tranquil and pristine that morning. Mount Kanjiroba was mirroring on the lake. To our amazement, the lake, immensely popularized by Eric Valli’s film “Caravan”, was in full solitude, having literally no tourists due to the protracted conflict. Lal Bahadur KC, the Principal of Govinda Primary Scholl told City Post that “an eerie silence has enveloped this region due to the conflict.”

“Though (the film) Caravan has given Dolpo an international exposure, the hardship of the people is never any less,” correspondent Budha explained, “The dispute over the depth of this lake hasn’t yet been subsided.” The Department of Meteorology, in its survey three years back, had suggested the depth to be as 145 meters. However, other data contradict it to be as deep as650 meters.

The data of the Shey-Phoksundo Conservation Office too suggest that foreign tourists visiting the lake numbered just 36 till November this year. Tourists visiting this destination had reached 254 two years back. The arrival took downturn since the Maoists imposed US$100 per person as entry tariff to the area.

“In any case, the beauty of the lake overshadows whatever,” explained Principal Ghanashyam Sharma of Tapiricha School, “Scores of people throng here asking for the place from where the yak fell into the lake in the film.”
